This ray of sunshine keeps the novel from being entirely dark. Martha’s relationship with her sister, Ingrid, is beautifully witty and full of hope. ![]() It’s sad and brutal in so many ways - but is also uplifting. This book is about navigating life with a severe mental illness and how it intertwines with our relationships, careers and family members. When she finally gets together with Patrick, who has been in love with her since she was fourteen, everything gets more complicated.Īfter finding out more about her mental illness and the medication she is on, Martha discovers that she could have had children by the age of forty, which serves as a massive blow to her relationship with Patrick. She knows she can never have children due to the medication she has been put on, but nothing in her life ever feels right. ![]() Martha has always known there is something wrong with her, but putting the finger on what it is - is another matter. The novel has a relatively simple premise in that it follows the life of Martha over many years, but it will keep hooks in you right after you finish the final page. ![]() Every so often, you come across a book that makes you go ‘wow.’ For me, that was Sorrow and Bliss.
